Byrne, Frantz, and Weymouth met as freshmen at the Rhode Island School of Design, where Byrne and Frantz were part of a band called the Artistics.
The Artistics dissolved the following year, and the three moved to New York City, eventually sharing a communal loft.
Weymouth began dating Frantz and served as the band's driver. After graduation, the three of them moved to New York City. Since Byrne and Frantz were unable to find a suitable bass guitar player she joined them at the latter's request and began learning and playing the instrument.

The band played their first gig as Talking Heads, opening for the Ramones at CBGB on June 5, 1975.
The band recorded a series of demos for CBS, but did not receive a record contract. However, they drew a following and signed to Sire Records in November 1976.
In March 1977, they added Jerry Harrison, after the release of their debut single, "Love → Building on Fire", formerly of Jonathan Richman's band the Modern Lovers, on keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals.
He was offered a spot in the band in 1976, while he was still studying at Harvard. Tina Weymouth phoned Harrison to ask him to come and see Talking Heads play in Boston, not knowing he had already seen them and had been impressed by their material. After the performance, Harrison did not give a precise answer about whether he would join the group.
