Steve Scales (born 27 April 1951) is a percussionist who played in Talking Heads' expanded lineup, first performing with the band at Heatwave Festival on 23 August 1980. Steve was well known for taking his shirt off during performances and working as hype man for the band.
First playing in smaller R&B acts like The Winners, Steve would eventually join Talking Heads through mutual contacts Busta Jones and Bernie Worrell.
After the final Talking Heads touring performance on 6 February 1984, he joined the band for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance on 18 March 2002 as well as attending their Los Angeles Stop Making Sense Q&As in 2023 and 2024. He has also appeared as a guest during shows by David Byrne in 2018 and Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew in 2023.
