On December 16, 1983, Talking Heads performed at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, California. This concert was the fourth and final of a four-night residency at the venue which was used to record Stop Making Sense, although this final show was not recorded as they had already gained enough footage from the previous shows. This is the final full-length concert that Talking Heads performed in America, with the band retiring from touring after their 1984 tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Details
After seeing Talking Heads in California earlier in the Speaking in Tongues Tour, director Jonathan Demme approached them about documenting their shows with a concert film, which they decided to record in California. After originally planning to film at San Francisco's Kabuki Theatre on December 10 and 11, they moved the filming location to Hollywood's Pantages Theatre instead. Following a rehearsal at the theatre with no audience on December 12, the band's residency at The Pantages started on December 13, however no footage from that night was used in Stop Making Sense. The film uses footage from the second and third shows, on December 14 and December 15. This fourth and final show on the 16th was not recorded for the film, as they were satisfied with the footage they had already captured. This was the last concert that Talking Heads scheduled in America, with the band departing to Australia the following January then finishing a tour of New Zealand in February 1984, which included their final shows before they retired from touring.
